What's Changed When Saving Images

➜ English

In iOS 26.4, downloading an image now asks you to choose between “View” or “Download.”

The difference isn’t immediately obvious, so let’s break it down. Choosing View works exactly as before.

As noted in bold: choosing Download is, frankly, confusing. Saving the data directly to the Files app will be covered later, but outside of that, just getting to the menu is already a hassle. The icons that look like a menu? Fakes. Long-pressing does nothing. You have to tap to reveal a share button, then dig through layers from there. Once you’ve done it, you’ll never want to do it again — which makes me question whether it’s even worth spending time explaining something nobody wants to use. So for now, no screenshots.
4/15: Done. It’s safe to say this feature requires the Files app — it simply doesn’t work as intended without it. Without the Files there’s no real benefit, and using it unknowingly will quietly eat into your storage.

★
If you want to share a PDF, tap the magnifying glass in the download list and it’ll take you to the Files app — figure out where to save it from there.
★
For saving wallpapers and everything else, just tap View without hesitation and long-press as you always have. It’s a shallower path.

The download instructions on this site have already been updated to say View. Though it might be worth going back and updating the older posts as well — legacy content included.

This change was crammed in at the last minute. It feels like something that wasn’t in the development team’s original plan — tacked on from above for reasons unknown (The download dialog itself isn’t new — it’s been appearing for PDFs and similar files for some time. It’s simply been extended to images, with no changes whatsoever to the wording. Probably a one-word change in the code — just moving “image” from one place to another.).

Update: This dialog may or may not appear consistently. Whether it’s a caching issue or just general instability, hard to say.
