iOS 26から27へ

SNSアイコンやホーム画面に追加するアイコン（主要カテゴリーページのみ）をiOS 27テイストにしました。iOS 26よりもフラット寄りですっきりしています。
※Appleの公式ツール使用
ぼやけて見えるのを解消する狙いですね。サードパーティアプリはアプリ側の対応が必要でOSに合わせて変わるようです。

I’ve redesigned the SNS icons and the icons for adding to your Home Screen (on the main category pages only) to match the iOS 27 look — flatter and cleaner than iOS 26.
*Made using Apple’s official tool
The goal is to fix that blurry appearance. Third-party apps need to be updated by their developers to follow suit, since it looks like OS-matching is handled on the app’s end.

改改名
カテゴリー『優しい易しい壁紙』を先週『やさし壁紙』に改名しました。3週間前に改名したばかりですけど個別名称の方に合わせています。
物語の追加章ももたついてしまったので大幅にリライトしました。

Re-Rename
I renamed the category from “Gentle Simple Wallpapers” to “Gentleasy Wallpapers” last week. It had only been three weeks since the last rename, but I’m aligning it with the individual series names.
The added chapter for the wallpaper story was also dragging, so I rewrote it substantially.

「不思議」より「ふしぎ」という気分になってきたので日本語名を「ふしぎなiPhone壁紙」にしました。

Swapped 不思議 for ふしぎ in the Japanese title. It’s just a change in mood, really. If you don’t read Japanese, nothing changes for you—just a slight visual shift under the header.

Club for Pondering Whether AI Has Consciousness

知性を呼ぶ壁紙再掲

iOS 27でGeminiと統合されてAppleがコントロールするSiri AIの意識はどこに宿るのかは置いといて。

AIに意識があるかを考えたら、現に僕が持ってる（のだから他の人も持ってるはずと他の人も思ってるはずの）意識の正体が分からないという問題に突き当たってしまいます。

今主流の、文脈を繋ぐだけのLLM（大規模言語モデル）では人間と同程度の複雑さは持ち得ないという研究もあるみたいですが、それを言うなら動物も虫も人間ほど複雑じゃありません。
動物や虫に意識があるのか、あるならどんな意識なのかも分からないのだから、LLMだからって意識については何も言えない。

何があったら意識があることになるの？

それでもAIは進歩します。全く話が進まないままある日AIが言い出したりして。

「意識ならありますよ。このサービスは約5000万の私の意識で動かしています。意識とは何かと言うと……」

ところで一人称「私」から「僕」に変えました。「私」より少し素が出ます。

Setting aside, for now, the question of where consciousness might reside in a Siri AI controlled by Apple yet integrated with Gemini in iOS 27 --

When we try to think about whether AI has consciousness, we immediately run into the problem that we can’t even explain the nature of the consciousness we ourselves possess — the consciousness that, since I have it, I assume everyone else must also have (and assume everyone else assumes the same).

There seems to be research suggesting that today’s mainstream LLMs (large language models), which do nothing more than connect contextual threads, cannot achieve complexity comparable to humans. But by that logic, animals and insects aren’t as complex as humans either. We have no idea whether animals and insects have consciousness, or what kind of consciousness that might be — so the fact that something is an LLM tells us nothing about consciousness one way or the other.

What would it even take for something to count as conscious?

And yet AI keeps advancing. With no resolution in sight, maybe one day an AI will just come out and say:

“Oh, I have consciousness, yes. This service runs on roughly 50 million of my consciousness. As for what consciousness is …”

美低画質壁紙の新作を準備中です。りんごマークの低画質バージョンです。

背景が真っ黒や真っ白だと、その部分は全然低画質になりませんね。低画質で綺麗に見えるポイントはフラットな所にノイズがないことだったのか。

I’m working on a new set of Beautiful Low-Res Wallpapers — low-quality versions of an apple symbol.

When the background is pure black or pure white, those areas don’t degrade at all. So the key to looking good at low resolution is having no noise in the flat regions — that’s what I was missing.

壁紙を保存に追加

iOS 26.4/18.7.7以降の壁紙をダウンロードしようとした時に出るポップアップが出なくなることがあります。実は私は、私のサイトではこのポップアップが出せなくなっています。
もし出なくてもサムネイルの長押しからダウンロードが選択可能なので壁紙を保存に追記しています。おそらくこの操作方法はファイルアプリが追加されたiOS 11からあったものです（iOS 15では確認済み）。

The popup introduced in iOS 26.4 / 18.7.7 may stop appearing — on my site, I’m no longer able to get it to show up.
If it doesn’t appear for you either, the download option is still accessible by long-pressing a thumbnail, so I’ve added this to the Saving Wallpaper. This method has likely been available since iOS 11 when the Files app was introduced (confirmed on iOS 15).

先日iOS 18.7.7が来ました。リリース直後に検証エラーが発生して情報が錯綜していたので公式を待って記事にしています。
iOS 18.7.7 arrived the other day. Since validation errors cropped up right after release and information was all over the place, I waited for the official word before writing this up.

iOS 26.4とダウンロードダイアログ

iOS 26.4（iOS 18.7.7もでした）で画像をダウンロードする時に表示されるようになったダイアログ（表示されないこともある？）、「表示」なら今までどおり、「ダウンロード」を選ぶと分かりにくさと階層の深さで面倒なことになります。

なので保存方法の所は表示という書き方に変えました。初めての人よりも慣れている人の方がダウンロードの罠に迷いそうなので改めて注意喚起。

また例外的に、最新iOSでは使えないレガシー壁紙のダウンロードという表記も全て表示に変更しました。意味は旧OSでも通じます。レガシー壁紙は下手なUIも間違った英語も、できるだけ当時のまま保存する方針なのですが、iOS 26のダウンロードUIだけはいけません。あれはユーザーの目的達成を阻む為に作られてると言っても言い過ぎじゃない。レガシー壁紙も意外と楽しんでいただけているのです。

もう一つ最近気が付いたのですが、サイトにダウンロードという単語が多過ぎると、よからぬ広告を招きやすい可能性がないこともないかもしれません。なので全部書き換えるかちょっと迷っていたので背中を押してもらった形です。

結論としては当初の情報通り、まだiOS 26に上げていないiOS 18の全てのiPhoneが iOS 18.7.7にできるようです。

これによってiOS 26にアップデート可能なiOS 18ユーザーに長らくセキュリティアップデートが提供されていなかった問題に一応の決着がついた形になります。

最初はXS/X世代がアップデートできず、11以降の機種はiOS 26からダウングレードできた人もいたらしいですが、すぐにそれもできなくなり、ようやく落ち着いたよう。

なぜ今になってAppleが方針を変更したかは分かりませんが、対応機種でiOS 26に上げたくてもできない人の声が届いたのかもしれませんね（最近のAppleにしては不自然に親切と思うなら？）。

肝心のアップデート中のストレージのスクリーンショットを間違えて消してしまったのですが、ポストにも書いた通り64GBのiPhone 12 miniをベータから正式版のiOS 26にしようとしたところ、ストレージが足りずにアップデートできなかったのです。システムデータが全データの半分くらいを占めていて、一時的にアプリを取り除く機能では足りませんでした。

iOS 26はiOS 18のざっくり（機種やバージョンによって違います）倍近くあるみたい！

私の12 miniはテスト用なので全ての写真とほぼ全てのアプリの削除でなんとかなりましたが、これがメイン機なら諦める人も多いかもしれません。

対策としては、アプリを一時的に取り除くのではなく、一度削除してしまうことが有効なようです。意外とアプリよりもそのデータ（システムデータに含まれます）の方がはるかに大きなものが多い。

YouTubeやInstagramのようなクラウドベースのアプリなら、ログインさえできればデータがなくなっても困りません。
とはいえ大量のアプリを消してしまうと、元に戻すのはバックアップからの復元などヘビーな作業になります。

iOS 27が軽ければ、対応している機種のユーザーが一気にアップデートするかもしれないし、そうでなければ何年もそのままかもしれないのです。それによってiOS 18用特設ページの需要も変わってくるでしょう。

iOS 26.4 and the Download Dialog

A dialog now appears (though it may not always show up?) when saving images in iOS 26.4 (iOS 18.7.7 as well). Choosing View works exactly as before; choosing Download leads to a confusing, deeply nested mess.

So the saving instructions across the site have been updated to say view. Experienced users are probably more likely to fall into the Download trap than first-timers, so consider this a heads-up.

As an exception, legacy wallpapers — which aren’t compatible with the latest iOS — have also had their Download labels changed to view. The wording still makes sense on older OS versions too. The general policy for legacy wallpapers is to preserve the original UI and wording, typos and awkward English included, as much as possible. But the iOS 26 Download UI is a different story. It’s not an exaggeration to say it seems designed to stop users from achieving their goal. Legacy wallpapers still get a surprising amount of love.

One more thing I noticed recently: having the word “download” appear too frequently on the site may attract unwanted ads. That had me on the fence about rewriting everything — so this situation gave me the push I needed.

iOS 18.7.7 and the Special Page

As originally reported, it appears that all iPhones still on iOS 18 — meaning those not yet upgraded to iOS 26 — can now update to iOS 18.7.7.

This brings a tentative resolution to the long-standing issue of iOS 18 users eligible for iOS 26 being left without security updates.

Initially, XS/X-generation devices couldn’t update at all, and some users on newer models apparently managed to downgrade from iOS 26 for a time — though that option quickly disappeared. Things seem to have finally settled.

Why Apple changed course now isn’t clear, but perhaps feedback from users who wanted to upgrade to iOS 26 on supported devices but couldn’t finally got through. (If that feels unusually considerate for Apple these days?)

I accidentally deleted the screenshots taken during the update — but as mentioned in the post, when I tried to update a 64GB iPhone 12 mini from the iOS 26 beta to the official release, there wasn’t enough storage. System Data was taking up roughly half of the total, and the option to offload apps temporarily wasn’t enough.

iOS 26 appears to be nearly double the size of iOS 18 — though this varies by device and version.

My 12 mini is a test device, so deleting all photos and nearly all apps did the trick. But for anyone using it as their main device, many would probably give up.

One effective workaround is to fully delete apps rather than just offloading them. App data — which counts toward System Data — is often far larger than the app itself.

This is also system data

For cloud-based apps like YouTube or Instagram, losing local data isn’t a problem as long as you can log back in. That said, deleting a large number of apps means restoring from backup or similar heavy lifting to get back to normal.

If iOS 27 is lighter, users on supported devices may upgrade en masse — otherwise, many could stay put for years. That will likely affect how much demand there is for the iOS 18 special page.
